Brief Recap of Team CardioSmart

MS 2011 Annual Meeting

MS 2011 Annual Meeting

I am proud and honored to be part of Team CardioSmart and for the efforts that our team has put forth these past 4 years. We started with a small team at the Tour de Shore in Salisbury, MD in 2008. As those of us that participated remember, it was brutally hot with temperatures in the low 100’s. It was so hot that the pavement was crackling under our tires. Only 1 of us made it to the finish line for the full century ride. Beginning in 2009, the event was combined with the Challenge Walk and renamed the Chesapeake Challenge and moved to Chestertown, MD. In 2009, Team CardioSmart was named “Rookie Team of the Year” and was also recognized for having both bike and walk teams. Team CardioSmart was back last year with a smaller team and while a difficult year due to the economy and a smaller team, we were still able to raise a significant amount of money for the Maryland Chapter of National MS Society. For the two-day event, Team CardioSmart rode and walked a total of 1,546 miles. This is the equivalent of traveling from Washington, DC to Denver or to Saint Louis and back. We also raised a total of $24,665 for the MD Chapter of the National MS Society. This is $15.95 per mile raised for MS. That makes it a total of $71,000 raised for MS by Team CardioSmart during the past 4 years. Quite an accomplishment and one to be very proud of. We have helped a lot of families in Maryland that are dealing with MS everyday!!

Fundraising Team of the Year

As Team CardioSmart gets geared up for 2012, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the National MS Society MD Chapter’s 2011 Annual Meeting & Volunteer Awards on October 26th. At their annual meeting, Team CardioSmart was recognized as Fundraising Team of the Year!  msride2011-3   Nominations are submitted every year through the Fall MS Connection publication and after tallying the votes, Team CardioSmart was the Chesapeake Challenge winner! This is a great accomplishment and recognition for all of the hard work that Team CardioSmart has done for the past 4 years. I was seated at a table with Mr. Ed Duggan for which all the awards are named; Ed Duggan Community Champion Awards. Ed has been active in the MD Chapter for 30 years and is a member of the Board of Trustees. He is dedicated and passionate advocate for the rights of citizens with disabilities in the workplace, community and government. It was an honor getting to meet and discuss our team with him.

2012 Edition

We are back and better than ever!!  I am looking forward to this year with Team CardioSmart. 2012 will be our best year ever. We will raise more than we have in the past and we will have more team members than we have had in the past. Below are the Team goals and links to get registered for the Challenge Walk and Challenge Bike.

2012 Team Goals

I have set some very lofty goals for team CardioSmart in 2012. I know we can do it. Let’s keep Team CardioSmart as one of the top teams in Maryland — last year we finished 3rd overall, 4th as a bike team and 3rd as a walk team. Let’s make 2012 our best year yet. Simply stated the 2012 goals are:

  • 30 Team Members
  • $30,000 Raised
  • $100,000 5-year Total
