Last weekend I attended a photo safari sponsored by the Washington Photo Safari™ organization. This safari was Ridin’ the Rails with Your Camera: A Photo Safari on the Washington Metro! Our host for the day was the organization’s founder E.David Lauria. I left for the Shady Grove Metro on a very cold day with my camera, lenses and memory cards. An hour and a half later I arrived at the Ronald Reagan National Airport Metro stop and met up with the rest of the group – about 16 folks. We introduced ourselves and went over the ground rules. While it was cold, much of the day was in the underground portions of the Washington, DC Metro system, once we left Reagan National Airport after some shooting from the platform. We spent time at the Judiciary Square, Metro Center and Dupont Circle stations as well. It was nice having permission to do some photography within the Metro system.
There was lots of things to see and to try to capture with my lens. The most difficult aspect was the ability to get enough light and thus a decent exposure. I had to increase the ISO and use a wide open aperture for most of the shots. I used several lenses ranging from a 70-200mm telephoto to a 10mm fisheye lens. Having to primarily use a “short” or “wide” lens, also forced me to get close and really work on the composition of the shot.
Below are some of the images that I captured on this day. Hope you enjoy the show!

David, these images are captivating! You have an amazing eye and vision to select your angles, subjects, colors…everything! I want them all!
Hey Dave, I found your site in a thread while I was trying to fix some issues on my site. Anyway, nice job! I like the metro images you captured, some nice curves and shapes there.
